White Oak Lavender Farm & The Purple WOLF Vineyard

Purple Wolf Vineyard will be joining us this year at the August 5, 2018 Wine and Oyster Festival On Sunny Slope Farm in support of the Artisan Center of Virginia. Come on out to taste their wine as well as wine from 10 other Shenandoah Valley Virginia Wineries.

White Oak Lavender Farm is owned and operated by the Haushalter family in Harrisonburg, Virginia. This is in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley near Massanutten Resort. We grow over 8,000 lavender plants and about 3,000 grape vines in many interesting varieties. We harvest our lavender plants in the summer to dry the flowers for buds and to extract the essential oil and hydrosol or floral water through steam distillation. We harvest our grapes in the Fall to make 11 delicious wines.

Julie Walton Haushalter began growing lavender as a hobby on the farm and soon was making products for family and friends. Next, Julie’s parents, Jim and Jessie Walton, volunteered to help harvest and make bundles for drying so that Jessie and Rick Haushalter’s mother, Margaret, could sew items such as lavender pillows, eye masks, neck wraps and lavender-filled sock monkeys. It wasn’t long before they were off to the Downtown Harrisonburg Farmer’s Market to sell their products! In addition to products being offered year- round online and at the farm store, products are available April – December on Saturdays at the Harrisonburg Farmer’s Market.

The farm has been open to the public since 2008 and has grown into a popular year-round agritourism venue. We offer a wine tasting experience, tours, lectures, classes, a petting area and a lovely lavender gift shop.

As CEO, (Chief Experience Officer) Julie’s life experiences and career path has influenced her commitment to helping others become more aware of ways in which to manage the effects of stress on the body and spirit at White Oak Lavender Farm.  Our theme, Color My World Purple, is focused on how the farm and our products can bring hope, love, encouragement and peace to the world. Check out the many classes, labyrinth workshops and farm tours that are available!

Rebecca Haushalter Frakes, daughter of Rick and Julie, also works full time in the family business as the farm operations manager. After graduating from Virginia Tech in Hospitality and Tourism from the Pamplin School of Business, she invested several years learning the wine industry. She interned in Napa Valley and then worked as a manager at CrossKeys Vineyard. She has since planted several thousand vines on the family farm and now manages our tasting room called The Purple WOLF Vineyard! You can often find her husband, Matt volunteering as a Tasting Specialist!

Our winemaker, Randy Phillips is the owner of Cave Ridge Vineyards in Mt. Jackson, VA. Randy has over 25 years of experience in winemaking and is well renowned in the Virginia region. Randy makes our wines from grapes on our estate, his estate or sourced in the Shenandoah Valley.  We are continuously developing new combinations of grapes and lavender types for new and exciting flavors! We all enjoy this, as someone has to do all the flavor testing!

Brix & Columns Vineyards

Brix & Columns will be joining us this year at the August 5, 2018 Wine and Oyster Festival On Sunny Slope Farm in support of the Artisan Center of Virginia. Come on out to taste their wine as well as wine from 10 other Shenandoah Valley Virginia Wineries.

Brix and Columns Vineyards is a family run vineyard and winery. We offer tastings and wine for sale by the glass or bottle. We have 360 degree views of both the Massanutten and Blue Ridge mountains with ample indoor and outdoor space for guest to enjoy their wine and surrounding views. We are open seven days a week. We look forward to seeing you there!

Steve and Stephanie both grew up in the farming world.  Steve helped his grandparents on their family farm, and Stephanie was an avid horse rider who welcomed the responsibility that came with raising and riding horses.  Acknowledging how important their farming backgrounds were in both providing fond childhood memories and in instilling a strong work ethic, the Pences knew that they wanted to provide the same experience for their own children.  In 2003, they found the perfect property just miles from both of their childhood homes.  The panoramic mountain views were the icing on the cake of this 160 acre farm.

All of our vines have been planted in the past two years, giving our visitors unique insight into the vineyard start-up process.  We are currently growing six varietals: Cabernet Franc, Chambourcin, Chardonnay, Petit Verdot, Vidal Blanc, and Viognier.  The Shenandoah Valley AVA, established in 1982, is becoming one of the well-known American Vitacultural Areas of Virginia due to its favorable growing conditions and ability to produce a large number of varietals.

Cave Ridge Vineyard

Cave Ridge Vineyard will be joining us this year at the August 5, 2018 Wine and Oyster Festival On Sunny Slope Farm in support of the Artisan Center of Virginia. Come on out to taste their wine as well as wine from 10 other Shenandoah Valley Virginia Wineries.

Cave Ridge Vineyard is a family-owned and operated vineyard and winery located in the foothills overlooking the Shenandoah Valley, which is world-renowned for its scenic beauty and history. Low rainfall and deep rocky soils make this an ideal location for growing the highest quality grapes used to make Cave Ridge wines.

The tasting room was opened in 2005 by owners Randy and Karen Phillips. Soon after opening, the estate-grown Virginia wines acquired a loyal following. Their daughter, Megan, later joined Cave Ridge Vineyard as the business manager.

Bluestone Vineyard

Bluestone Vineyard will be joining us this year at the August 5, 2018 Wine and Oyster Festival On Sunny Slope Farm in support of the Artisan Center of Virginia. Come on out to taste their wine as well as wine from 10 other Shenandoah Valley Virginia Wineries.

Bluestone Vineyard is a family owned and operated vineyard and winery, committed to crafting small-batch wines from locally sourced and estate grown fruit that showcase the very best in each varietal and each vintage. The result is a wine selection that constantly evolves to reflect the passion of the winemaker, the year, the weather, and the fruit.

Our Bluestone wines are produced here at the vineyard, in our winery, located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.  These Virginia wines are aged either in barrels in our climate controlled barrel room or in stainless steel tanks where the temperature is computer controlled to give us the optimal conditions to develop the wine.  We then bottle the wines onsite and place them in climate controlled storage behind the tasting room.

Narmada Winery

Narmada Winery will be joining us this year at the August 5, 2018 Wine and Oyster Festival On Sunny Slope Farm in support of the Artisan Center of Virginia. Come on out to taste their wine as well as wine from 10 other Shenandoah Valley Virginia Wineries.

Narmada Winery was established in Rappahannock County, VA in 2009. Owners Pandit and Sudha Patil had a long-standing dream to own a vineyard one day.

Sudha and Pandit at first intended only to grow the fruit to provide to other Virginia vintners. But Sudha’s curiosity about the winemaking process grew, and she began reading everything she could on how to vinify wine. As her interest increased, she commenced studies with Jim Law of Linden Vineyards, one of Virginia’s premier winemakers. Today Sudha refers to Jim as “the guru of Virginia wine.”

The combination of art and science is a given in making wine. Sudha Patil’s competence in both areas has made Narmada Winery something special right from the start. With attention to using the best quality grapes, diligent sorting of the berries, and maintaining proper chemistry of acidity and pH, Sudha’s medical background ensures clean processing of the fruit from harvest through the aging process.

Sudha’s knowledge of complex spices acquired during her childhood in India enable her to coax latent flavors from her grapes that perhaps would be overlooked by others. Her focus is to create graceful wines that are a true reflection of the fruit and to produce Virginia wines of the highest possible quality.

Castle Glen Estates Farm and Winery will be joining us this year at the August 5, 2018 Wine and Oyster Festival On Sunny Slope Farm in support of the Artisan Center of Virginia. Come on out to taste their wine as well as wine from 10 other Shenandoah Valley Virginia Wineries.

Born out of our love of fine wines and delicious food, Castle Glen Estates Farm and Winery has become the premiere boutique winery for the best Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in Virginia. After traveling the world and sampling Cabernet from the old world and the new, we decided to make our way back home and bring the world to you.

In the world of wine, it is said that “Cab is King.” Yet, less than 20% of the Virginia Grape crop is Cabernet Sauvignon.  Our biggest challenge was finding the right, high-quality vines for the wine we wanted to make. Hence, our small vineyard was planted. We are dedicated to offering only the finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot wine in Virginia. We have also taken great care in assembling a team to provide only the best vineyard management and wine making available.

Come and taste the experience for yourself.

“There is absolutely no substitute for the best. Good wine cannot be made of inferior ingredients masked with high flavor. It is true thrift to use the best ingredients available and to waste nothing.” – James Beard

When we first laid eyes on the beautiful rolling hills we now call CrossKeys Vineyards, it was nothing more than a thick forest. After crossing the fence which divided the land from the road, we saw the vision of the vineyard come to life. With no roads on the property, we walked through the untouched forest to the top of the first hill. Through the dense trees we could see the immaculate Massanutten Mountain peeking through, dominating the landscape. A few months after purchasing the land, we had a family picnic to celebrate the wonderful new beginnings with a bottle of Pinot Noir. It was there in that moment the realization of the endless possibilities this land had to offer was planted in our minds. Not too long after, in 2001 the first vines were planted. After many years of hard work, passion, hope, and most importantly perseverance breathed life into our dream; opening the doors to our own vineyard. In May of 2008, we opened the doors to the tasting room and offered the first vintage of 2006, 100% estate grown wine from the once forgotten land.

The two gold crossed keys are an old symbol of hospitality, excellence, and a place of prestige. The keys embody our goal of producing exquisite wines, delicious food, fabulous events, but most of all they are a daily reminder that we are here to provide an excellent experience for every guest that walks through our doors.

Thank you for believing in our dreams,

The Bakhtiar Family
