Barren Ridge Vineyards is a small, family-owned winery in the heart of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Owned by John and Shelby Higgs, the property was originally purchased in 1934 by John’s father James Higgs, an apple grower. John grew up here, picking apples and cultivating an appreciation for the land and for the agricultural heritage of this region. Decades later, after his retirement from Phillip Morris, John and his wife Shelby cleared the overgrown apple orchard and planted a vineyard. They renovated the old apple packing barn and transformed it into a state-of-the-art winery, tasting room, and event facility, using reclaimed wood and preserving the charm and character of the original building. Now they welcome guests from far and wide to enjoy the rustic tranquility and natural beauty of Barren Ridge Vineyards while savoring a glass of one of their award-winning, handcrafted wines.
2017 Wine Festival
Since opening our Virginia winery to the public in the spring of 2011, Whitebarrel has become a place to relax and enjoy our distinctive wines. Since 2006, Whitebarrel, previously known as Attimo, has grown from a small patch of “test vines” to a large vineyard and tasting room.
Vines have been planted every year, beginning in 2007 through the present with many of our vines bearing fruit beginning in 2010. There are now over 11,000 vines on the property & many thousand raspberry and blackberry plants.
Bazzle’s Bakery will be serving up all kinds of chocolate and sweet treats to pair with the wonderful Virginia Wines that will be at the Wine Festival.
Dayton Tavern loves to serve food to people who understand the importance of “Breaking Bread”. Where you eat together as a celebration of the gift of life and importance of positive relationships with people from all walks of life. I want to be able to serve food that makes people smile. Food that brings back a memory of a dish served by grandma or something you had on vacation…the BEST thing you ever ate! Most people who have an appreciation for food have that connection with stimulating all of the senses. I’m not talking about just the taste and texture of the meal, but if there is music or art or is it paired with a great wine or just a nice glass of lemonade…the experience is exponential! That is why we are excited about being part of the wine festival.
Dayton Tavern will be serving charcuterie boards that feature local and Italian cheeses.
Chris and Harrison are two brothers who have been playing music together for over 10 years. This most recent project of The Lion Brothers consists of instrumental music that embodies their inspiration as musicians and artists.
We offer the the best tasting oysters in the Chesapeake Bay
Our Big Island Oysters are grown on a beautiful, pristine body of water nestled between the York River, the Mobjack Bay and Myrtle Point Narrows.
Big Island is where a community of watermen lived and worked the waters of the Chesapeake Bay.
Professional oyster tasters refer to these oysters as the “quintessential oyster”; the perfect blend of salty, sweet and buttery. Perfect for any occasion.
Willkommen!
Discover award winning wines, exceptional mountain vistas, and a storybook setting in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia! From the winery deck enjoy the views of our vineyard site that has been farmed since the 1700’s. The first grapes were planted in 1982 and included Chambourcin, Chardonnay, and Vidal Blanc. Today, our plantings are enhanced with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Riesling, Traminette, and German-Austrian varietals Gruner Veltliner and Zweigelt.
North Mountain’s winemaker strives to present a unique array of elegant wines exclusive to our vineyard’s terroir. The charming European architecture of the winery building is the perfect setting for our continental special events, cuisine, and celebrations.
North Mountain is open year-round, Wednesday – Sunday from 11:00 am – 5:00 pm, for wine tastings and purchases. We welcome groups and buses.
Special Events are listed on our website. A gift shop offers unique gifts and local artistry. Our elegant and cozy Tasting Room with fire place offers tastings of our unique wines. Stephanie Nakasian “The Renaissance Woman of Jazz”
Stephanie Nakasian is an exciting, well‐seasoned vocalist and master of innovative jazz improvisation, completely authentic with a fresh and vibrant sound all her own. Bringing high energy to every perfor‐ mance, Stephanie enthralls listeners with her pure tones and a flawless delivery, engaging them on a per‐ sonal level with a love for the music that is playful, electric and spontaneous in story and song.
Then & Now: Stephanie came to international attention in the mid‐80s when she sang and toured with the vocal jazz master Jon Hendricks and Company – what she considers her “vocal jazz apprenticeship.” She continues to tour and record as a vocal leader with her partner and internationally acclaimed jazz pia‐ nists Hod O’Brien or improvisational master, Harris Simon.
Recordings: With 26 recording projects, Stephanie continues to be an active recording artist. Her debut CD “Comin’Alive” (V.S.O.P.) featuring legendary saxophonist Phil Woods received four stars from critic Leonard Feather. “French Cookin’” (V.S.O.P.) spotlights the beautiful combination of Stephanie’s voice with virtuoso French hornist Bobby Routch. Her “Bitter Sweet” CD (JazzMania) is highly lauded along with “Escapade” as she takes the audience on a fantasy swing voyage and her “Lullaby in Rhythm” in tribute to Kenton singer June Christy featuring saxophonist Harry Allen. In 2006 two CDs were released: “Thrush Hour” (VSOP), a tribute to 20 great jazz singers including a 20 page booklet co‐authored by Scott Yanow with pictures, bios and educational tips as to how to listen to each singer to hear the nuances of style and
phrasing and “I Love You” (Spice of Life) was released in Japan to rave reviews including a full article in
“Swing Journal” in which they called Stephanie “the perfect jazz singer.”
